Signals of the EEG reflect the state of awareness of the subject. As you can see, it is a very faint signal (tens of microvolts) that must be processed by special amplifiers. But Cognitive Neuroscientists often use EEG to extract another kind of signal, that of the ERP, Event Related Potential.
